If you seem to be experiencing a slower connection to other sites on the Internet than this test seems to indicate, then the problem lies outside of our network, and thus outside of our control. Your connection speed to other sites will depend on a number of factors, including the number of network components (or "hops") there are between our network and theirs, as well as the amount of traffic besides yours that is travelling over those same components.

If your connection speed seems to vary greatly when you hit this page several times in a row, or if the speed on successive tries is much larger than the first try, then your browser may be caching this page. This means that rather than showing the connection speed to the server, the page is showing the speed of your connection to your own hard drive. Usually you can hold down your <ctrl> key (<control> key for MAC users) and click "refresh" to override the cache.
